Time Becomes Art
A finished dial is never taken up again. What has been worked once belongs to one person.
Access to everything that is made no longer sets anyone apart. The piece, however rare, already exists. Past a certain step, the difference no longer lies in the marque, but in the fact that the object existed before the man who wears it.
Here the order is reversed. The man comes first, the drawing grows out of what he told, and the dial is worked once. The finished piece passes into the possession of the person who commissioned it, and there it stops. Augustin Matei works one composition at a time.
A public portfolio of 73 one-off watches.
A finished dial
closes for good.
A limited edition means that other identical examples exist, numbered. Here there is no second one, not now, not later, not in another version of the same idea.
The mark of the tool stays
on the dial.
It is cut with the mill, painted in layers, sculpted in relief. Under a light that falls from the side, the hand shows close up. Smoothing would erase the very proof.
A name appears only with
the owner's agreement.
The watch designer does not say who he works for. Whoever commissions receives the silence around the object as well. A name is written only where the owner has decided it is written.

A watch made as a tribute to a footballer and coach's career, and why he calls Augustin an artist, not a jeweller.
The difference lies in the materials, in the complication, and in how far the dial can go before it becomes impossible.

A story is told rather than a model chosen from a catalogue, and out of it comes a drawing that did not exist until then. The workshop takes on a small number of commissions each year.
