The story on the dial
The Starry Night was painted at Saint-Rémy, in June 1889, and was composed directly on the canvas, with no preparatory drawing. The sky took a layer of horizontal strokes first; the stars came over it, last.
This order is not a studio detail. Had the stars been laid down first, the sky would have swallowed them. Painted on top, they stay objects floating on something, not holes in something.
A dial of thirty-seven millimetres asks for the same discipline, taken further. The painting is not reduced, it is remade to scale: a stroke that works on a canvas of seventy centimetres becomes, on silver, a shapeless patch. Every element is redrawn until it holds its meaning at the final size.
Thirty-seven millimetres is, in the workshop's public portfolio, the smallest diameter with a stated measurement.
