The story on the dial
Playing cards are hard to paint on a dial, and the reason is ordinary: everyone knows exactly what they look like.
With a landscape or a figure, the eye accepts an approximation. With a playing card it does not: the proportion, the symbol, the position of the number are memorised by anyone who has held a pack. An error of half a millimetre in the drawing of a red heart is seen at once, without the viewer being able to say why.
The hand on the dial was chosen by the person who commissioned the piece. It is not the best possible hand; it is his hand, from one particular evening. That is the only thing about it that is passed on.
