The story on the dial
The piece was made for a military pilot, and a propeller aircraft moves across the subsidiary seconds dial.
The decision that cost the most does not show. A moving element on a subsidiary dial means the drawing has to stay legible in every position of the hand, not only in the one where it looks good. The work is done for all positions at once, and the composition is checked by moving the seconds hand round, degree by degree.
For a pilot, a chronograph has a function that is not decorative: it measures intervals. On this dial the instrument and the image occupy the same space, and the image is not allowed to win. If the painting made the numerals harder to read, the painting withdraws.
