The story on the dial
Mother-of-pearl, diamonds, gold and a metallic finish obtained for this piece. Four materials with four ways of sending light back, on thirty-eight millimetres.
Mother-of-pearl has no colour of its own: it produces colour through its layers, which break light apart. The diamond returns it concentrated, in a point. Gold reflects it diffusely and warm. The metallic finish scatters it.
The difficulty lies in none of them, but in putting them on the same disc without one putting out the other. A diamond set next to mother-of-pearl makes the pearl look dead; moved two millimetres, it brings the pearl back. The position of each element was decided by looking at the dial under different lights, not by drawing it on paper.
