The story on the dial
The English word clue comes from this story. It originally meant a ball of thread: the thread Ariadne gave Theseus so that he could find his way back out of the labyrinth. Every investigation today carries, without knowing it, the name of a ball of yarn.
Athens sent seven girls and seven boys as tribute. The civilisation that produced the story was called Minoan only in 1900, by the archaeologist who dug at Knossos; according to many scholars, Minos was a title of the rulers, not the name of one man.
The relief on the dial is not printed, it is taken out of the material. It is cut with the milling tool, layer after layer, and the shadow changes with the angle of the wrist. Seen from two different positions, the labyrinth seems to move its walls.
It is the only way a labyrinth can be honest on a flat surface.
