The story on the dial
The water is painted last. Until then, the city has to exist whole underneath: streets, walls, roofs, everything that will be covered and will never again be seen clearly.
If only what stays visible through the water is painted, the result is a greenish patch with vague shapes in it. Depth cannot be painted directly. It comes from putting something complete under a layer that partly hides it.
This means half the work does not show in the finished piece. The layers underneath exist only to make possible what is seen.
This describes the difference between a hand-worked dial and a printed one. Printing reproduces the top layer. The rest has nowhere to come from.
