The story on the dial
Zeus was hidden at birth and raised on Crete, far from the father who swallowed his children. The most powerful god of the pantheon begins, in every version of the story, as a hidden infant.
In the temple at Olympia a statue in ivory and gold was raised to him, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Nothing of it survives. We know what it looked like only from descriptions and from coins.
Forty-three and a half millimetres are not a preference, they are a consequence. The figure asked for the space, and the case came after it. Below this diameter, the features of the face would have run into each other and left a blur.
A dial cannot reproduce the statue at Olympia. It can, however, keep the ratio between a figure and the space around it, which is all that is left of it.
