The story on the dial
The scale and the ripple ask the same thing of the painter: a layer that lets light through and another that stops it.
The order cannot be reversed. If the opaque layer comes first, the water becomes a surface and the fish floats on top of it, like a sticker. If the transparent one comes first, light enters, returns from the depth, and the fish appears underneath, where it belongs.
The difference between the two versions cannot be explained before it is seen. Once it has been seen, the explanation is no longer needed.
