The story on the dial
The dial carries a Roman landscape with ancient columns, trees and water, painted in sfumato. In sfumato no outline is drawn: forms dissolve into tones that pass gradually into one another. The technique is tied to the name of Leonardo da Vinci, who used it in the Mona Lisa.
