The story on the dial
The ensemble at Târgu Jiu was inaugurated in 1938. The first version of the column, in wood, existed as early as 1918: twenty years between the idea and its final form.
Brâncuși worked all his life by subtraction. He took a form and removed everything in it that was not necessary, until what remained could no longer be reduced. It is not simplification, it is the exhaustion of a form.
A dial that carries him is not allowed to do the opposite. On a small surface the temptation is to add: one more detail, one more texture, one more shadow, so that the work shows. Here the work shows precisely in what is missing.
Twenty years from wood to metal also answer the question of how long a piece takes. Execution is measured in months. The idea is not measured.
