The story on the dial
A continent does not fit on four centimetres. What fits is what is left of a journey, after memory has already made the selection.
The commission started from someone who had been there and who brought not a photograph but a description. The light at six in the morning. A silhouette seen from far off. The colour of the earth after rain. The drawing comes from these, not from an image off the internet: a photograph would have given a correct and dead result.
Only what had survived in memory went onto the dial. The rest was taken out at the composition stage, where it is decided, every time, what does not go in.
