The story on the dial
Seven elements on a single dial, which had to be read in order.
A dial has no beginning and no end. The eye enters it where it likes, usually where there is most contrast, and from there it wanders without a rule. A composition that asks for a sequence therefore works against the form it sits on.
The solution was not to number them. The order comes from visual weight: the first element is the heaviest, the last almost disappears into the ground, and between them the decrease is continuous. The viewer does not know his eye is being led, but goes through the series in the right order. A single element placed wrongly would have broken the whole series.
