Sacred art, jewellery and time

On what it means to work one piece at a time, and why a finished composition is never taken up again.

An interview from October 2021, opened by a short introduction. Augustin Matei starts from the Faculty of Theology in Bucharest, Sacred Art section, and from the years when he designed gardens.

He tells how he reached his first watch after almost four years and dozens of failed dials, and that the first dial carried cave paintings. He talks about the materials of the pieces: precious metals, semi-precious stones, sometimes fragments of meteorite.

The interview also opens a less known chapter: his studies of contemporary jewellery at the Assamblage school. Of the people he has made pieces for, he names Pope Francis as the most important.
